Name: Silas Abdul Razak Bin Noor Shah
In this week’s feature article, we have 24-year-old, Silas Abdul Razak – Captain of the Singapore Men’s Team in the 2017 Razak Cup. Playing for Jansenites in the National Hockey League Division 1; Silas has 6 goals credited to him in just the 4 appearances he made in the league this year. The SIM Undergraduate has come a long way since he first started the sport at the age of 9 at Peixin Primary School. Clearly talented from the beginning, he has represented Singapore through the different age groups; U12, U14, U16, U18 and U21; before making his senior debut in the 2008 Razak Cup. Since then, he has made a name for himself in the team with 47 caps and 18 goals.
Silas scored 2 goals and was part of the team that secured the 3rd place finish at the recent 2017 SEA Games back in August. However, not one to rest on his laurels, he is eager to compete in the 2017 Razak Cup and it is understandable why. “My senior debut was in the 2008 Razak Cup and it’s been a few years since we (Singapore) have participated in this competition. This will be a great opportunity for the team to compete and get some good match experience.” Singapore last participated in this tournament in 2009, where they achieved a great result by coming in 2nd in Division 2.
Silas sees a greater purpose for the team aside from a medal placing. “Currently, the team consists of many younger players as compared to the team that took part in the SEA Games. There’s a mixture of our younger men’s national team players, the U18 and U16 national junior squad boys. I just hope that they grow and improve after every game.” This tournament will be critical in grooming the younger players and to get them “up to speed with what is needed to be a national player and play at a good level.” More importantly, it will demonstrate the potential that Singapore Hockey has in store for future regional and international tournaments and provide room for development for the younger athletes.
This will be Silas’ second tournament as captain of the side and he does not seem fazed by the added responsibility. In fact, he sees it as a great honour and responsibility to mentor the younger athletes. “I’m a little older now. With that, I hope to be able to calm the younger ones because there’s bound to be nervousness and pressure to perform.” Though the stress does kick in once in a while, what matters most to him is to “concentrate in playing good hockey and contribute to the team by supporting the players on and off-pitch.”
