POL-ITE 2009 Hockey Championships

30 Nov 09, SINGAPORE: The Polytechnic and Institute of Technical Education (ITE) hockey championships for 2009 ended last week with Nanyang Polytechnic (NYP)winning both the men and women tournaments.

The red hot favourites for both titles started the women's competition in the worst fashion when they succumbed 3-2 to Singapore Polytechnic (SP). However SP could not build on their fantastic start and drew their remaining games to render NYP the Women's champions.

The men's competition was more direct with NYP running away with the title. Winning all their games with in the least a 7-goal margin, NYP drew on a professional approached and a well structured training programme. Their coach, George Nathan Edward was delighted with the results and stated that both the boys and girls worked tirelessly to achieve these impressive results.

Meanwhile, the SP ladies only had themselves to blame for gifting the women's title to NYP. Needing only a win against the bottom side Temasek Polytechnic (TP), SP could only draw and hence were denied the title as NYP had beaten both Ngee Ann Polytechnic (NP) and TP.

In the men's competition, NP had won all their games barring their final meeting with NYP which they heavily lost 7-0. NYP's recent domination of the POL-ITE hockey scene has gotten the other teams to rally to work harder next season and oust the double winning champions.-story by SHF
