SHF U21 Championships 2010 Results Week 1

11 Jan 10, SINGAPORE: The Singapore Hockey Federation (SHF) Under-21 Championships started last weekend with the Boys tournament. The 14-team tournament saw Singapore Recreation Club (SRC) Team 1 scoring the biggest win, a massive 16-0 mauling of Hawks Hockey Club, however they were undone 4-0 by the Singapore Youth Olympic Games (YOG) squad on Sunday.

Goals galore was not restricted to the SRC games, as Jansenites saw off the challenge of Indian Association (IA) 6-1 in the opening game of the tournament and Singapore Cricket Club (SCC) cruised past Ceylon Sports Club (CSC) 11-1 in Saturday's second game.

In Group A's other vital clash, SCC drew 2-2 with Police Sports Association to ensure that the Group of death live up to its billing. SCC will be hoping to avoid defeat against Jansenites this weekend to cement their claim of a second round berth at the expense of either Police or Jansenites. The Padang club were rather unlucky in their game against Police where they were leading 2-0 with a shade over 20 minutes remaining. They could not hold onto the lead and the men in blue grabbed the goals to claim an important point. They will play CSC this Saturday.

Group B is turning out to be equally interesting after newcomers C&C United disposed of OVA-VJC 5-0 to put their hat into the ring for a second round place with SRC Team 1 and the YOG team. They go up against Hawks this weekend and will look to maintain their 100% record. SRC Team 1 who play OVA-VJC will be eager to compensate for the loss against the YOG side. Meanwhile the latter will also play OVA-VJC a day earlier.

Group C looks like a two horse race after ORA soundly beat Barkerites-SJI 7-0 and Khalsa score an important 2-0 win over SRC Team 2. The two winners square off against each other on Sunday to fight for the group's leadership.

As the games come at us thick and fast it would be useful to keep track of the players that put the ball in the net. This season, K Balakumaran of SCC leads the goal scorers' charts with his 5 goals from 2 games. The SRC trio of Reynard Goh, Mohamed Faris and Mohammad Jumaeen are 2-goals adrift on 3-goals apiece.-story by SHF
