SHF U21 Championships 2010 Results Week 4
31 Jan 10, SINGAPORE: The Singapore Hockey Federation (SHF) 2010 Under-21 Boy's championships has reached its second phase. The first round group stage was completed last weekend with no major surprises and the usual suspects advancing to the second phase.
Singapore Cricket Club (SCC) were the only powerhouse to be ousted in the first point of asking when they were eliminated by Police Sports Association in group A. Needing Police to draw or lose to Indian Association (IA), SCC were disappointed when the men in blue stormed to a convincing 4-1 victory. The win takes Police to the second round in Group E where they will lock horns with the Singapore Youth Olympic Games (YOG) squad and Old Rafflesians Association (ORA).
Jansenites who brushed aside a depleted Ceylon Sports Club team16-0 topped the group and will play in Group D alongside SRC Team 1 and Khalsa. Khalsa also registered a big win, destroying Barkerites-SJI 13-1 to top their group. The evenly matched group should provide loads of entertain for the month of February.
Meanwhile, in the Girl's championships, Crescent A scored a slender but paramount 1-0 win over IA. The win took Crescent A joint top with Jansenites in Group A. IA now will need something close to a miracle to advance to the semi-finals. Unlike IA, debutants Vijayanti HC are back in the mix after beating SCC 3-1. With two games still left to play the newcomers are in with a shout to make the semi-final cut.
In Group B action, Crescent B threw away a good chance to overtake Singapore Recreation Club (SRC) at the top of the group after letting a 2-0 lead slip against Old Victorian Association-Victoria Junior College (OVA-VJC) to draw 2-2.
Police had no such trouble as they overwhelmed Hawks HC 8-0 to close the gap on Crescent to just one point. OVA-VJC who have two games left to play may still have a telling part to play in who advances to the semi-finals at the latter stages of this month.
Talking about playing a vital role, in the goal scoring charts Lee Jie Ying of Police Sports Association bagged five goals to climb to the top of the girls top scorers' listing on those five goals. In the Boy's tournament, YOG's Muhd Haseef continues to lead with 12 goals while Jansenites' Mohammed Afiq moves into second spot 5-goals adrift. See below for next week's fixtures.-story by SHF
