Tornados' "Double Dutch" secures Women's Division 1 title

23 May 2010, SINGAPORE | Tornados Hockey Club secured their first ever Singapore Hockey Federation (SHF) Women's Division 1 title following an undefeated campaign. The Western Singapore club won their last three games of the season against the other top four clubs to cement their title credentials.

Scoring 13 goals in those three games, the club based out of the Hockey Village silenced naysayers and were stellar in a run of 9 wins and a draw, a blemish in an otherwise perfect season. Coached by a member of their men's team, Richard Ayres, Tornados caused a whirlwind by their disciplined adherence to their 3-2-3-2 formation and dismantled all comers with the exception of Singapore Recreation Club "A" with whom they drew 1-1.

In the final weekend of the season, Tornados beat Hollandse Club Lex 4-2. It's noteworthy that they were trailing 2-0 at one stage. If they were labelled lucky, they raced to a 3-0 lead against Hollandse Club Max the following day before finally winning 3-2.

Claiming the double Dutch secured for the almost completely rejuvenated Tornados side of last season the League title and promotion to the Premier League next season*. They will now look forward to negotiating the semi-finals in the play-offs against Buccaneers to make the cup finals on Saturday 5 June 2010.

Blessed with quality throughout the team, Tornados can only throw away the opportunity to do the double this season, but they must be wary of the Dutch threat in the finals as both Lex and Max will be squaring off in the other semi-finals.

Ayres and his charges together with star players, Gemma Thomas, Michaela Weiss and Laura Schmidt will be eager to bring more honours for the club in what is only their second season in the SHF league.-Story by SHF

*If Tornados are to play in the premier league, if we are to adopt this season's ruling, they will be restricted to only 4 foreign(PRs, Employment Pass, Work Permit and Student Pass holders) players. However, exceptions have been made to this ruling in the past.
