Upsets the order of the day in Women's Premier League

7 June 2010, SINGAPORE | The Singapore Hockey Federation (SHF) Women's Premier League (WPL) saw two upsets as the league heads to its half way mark next week. Singapore Cricket Club (SCC) extended their lead atop the WPL despite being held to bottom placed Crescent Hockey Club at the weekend.

Singapore Recreation Club (SRC) could not take advantage of SCC's slip up the day before and uncharacteristically lost to Jansenites 2-1 to allow SCC to move 4-points clear at the pinnacle of the league. The win was consolation for Jansenites who lost 1-0 to Police Sports Association the day before. The Northern Singapore club are 6-points adrift of SCC but only two behind Police and SRC who occupy 2nd and 3rd spot respectively.

Police started the ball rolling with a solid defensive display that kept Jansenites at bay until the 45th minute when experienced campaigner and player of the match Geraldine Ho converted a penalty corner to edge Police into the lead. The ladies in the blue hung onto till the end with dogged defending and claimed the points.

Sunday's first game saw table topping SCC fail to beat table propping Crescent girls. The goalless draw drew plenty of attention from the hockey fraternity and their coach Nordin Manaf was very proud of his team's efforts in the game.

SCC's manager Paul Lim however felt that the result left the door open for SRC to erode the three points that separated the Padang neighbours. Alas, SRC were not their usual composed self and played out a lacklustre and goalless first half. The game came to life after 41-minutes when Sri Syafizah drove her penalty corner home to give Jansenites the lead and sour memories of their narrow defeat by Police the day before was evaporating fast as was SRC's hopes of bridging the gap at the top of the league.

Nonetheless, Jansenites' joy lasted only 2-minutes when Li Meixian banged home a penalty corner for SRC to restore parity. SRC went all out for a win now but it was Jansenites that got the winner 5-minutes from time. Toh Li Min who was later voted player of the match scored a field goal to send the Jansenites bench into ruptures.

The league is getting exciting as we head into the second half of the season. Make sure to catch all the action at Sengkang Stadium. Also follow us now on Twitter join our Facebook group "Singapore Hockey". -story by SHF
