Jansenites lose ground but SRC extend lead in Men's Premier League

7 June 2010, SINGAPORE | The Singapore Hockey Federation (SHF) Men's Premier League (MPL) saw Jansenites falter twice against lower ranked teams. Singapore Recreation Club (SRC) however held their nerve to beat neighbours Singapore Cricket Club (SCC) to move 6-points clear at the top of the MPL.

The weekend started with a spirited performance from the Singapore Youth Olympic Games (YOG) squad who held Police Sports Association to a pulsating 2-2 draw. The draw has dented Police's push for the title albeit they remain unbeaten in the league thus far.

Haseef Salim opened the scoring through a penalty stroke after 20-minutes. With the lead the YOG boys were lifted but the half time break broke their rhythm and allowed Police to get back into the game.

6-minutes into the second half, Hazmi Ibrahim cancelled YOG's lead with a penalty corner conversion. This drove Police forward and after 59-minutes Farhan Kamsani scored a neat field goal to give Police the lead which lasted all but 3-minutes.

Salim was handed a glorious chance to equalise from the penalty spot once again and he did not disappoint. If their coach Gerard Danker was pleased with the result, he was delighted when his charges produced an upset when they beat Jansenites 4-2 on Sunday.

Jansenites who had drawn 1-1 with Old Rafflesians Association (ORA) the day before took the lead after only 7-minutes through an Attar Shaheed Sawawi field goal. Instead of crumbling, the YOG boys took the game to Jansenites and the impressive Fadhil Rizaini scored a field goal on 12-minutes and then doubled both his and his team's tally with another field goal on 26-minutes.

Jansenites regrouped during the break and Johnson Sivalingam smashed home a penalty corner on 43-minutes to level the game. But it was all YOG from there on end. Hidayat Rahim scored after 49-minutes for YOG to regain the lead and Nur Ashriq Ferdaus sealed the win on 64-minutes with another field goal.

The impressive win gave YOG 11-points and pulled them level with Jansenites. Earlier, Sabri Yuhari scored a rare field goal to give Jansenites a late lead against ORA. But 3-minutes from time, Wai Choong equalised through a field goal of his own to grab a share of the spoils.

SRC were quietly happy with their rivals not gaining ground on them and eased to a 2-0 win over SCC. Leon Lopez scored a 7th minute penalty corner to give the league leaders the lead and Ian Vanderput scored 3-minutes from time to cement the win.

SRC lead the MPL by 6-points from Police who have 14-points but two games in hand. Catch the latter stages at Sengkang Stadium. Also follow us now on Twitter and join our Facebook group both entitled "Singapore Hockey". -story by SHF
