Men's Premier League

Police and SRC heading for close title race in the MPL

14 June 2010, SINGAPORE | Police Sports Association and Singapore Recreation Club (SRC) are heading for the tightest finish in the Singapore Hockey Federation (SHF) Men's Premier League (MPL). SRC opened a 6-point lead in the MPL following their narrow 1-0 win over lowly Old Rafflesians Association (ORA).

Despite the half a dozen point cushion the Recs are somewhat nervy going into their final game against Police as their goal difference is inferior to that of Police and if the men in blue secure maximum points in their games against ORA and Jansenites coupled with avoiding a defeat against the Padang club, Police will become champions.

This is the first time a few years where the league is this close. Police play ORA on Saturday and the big game against SRC is on Sunday at 6.30pm at Sengkang Stadium. A win for either team at that juncture would be enough to secure the title.

Sunil Prasad a long serving member of the Recs' team scored the only goal via a penalty stroke against ORA. The 44th minute strike sets up nicely for a mouth watering clash this Sunday. Police destroyed Singapore Cricket Club (SCC) 12-0 to improve their goal difference and also gain confidence necessary to clinch a first title in this decade.

Hazmi Ibrahim hit 5-goals to exhibit his rich vein of form ahead of this mammoth clash. But before that they need to play ORA on Saturday. Saturday will also see another game between Jansenites and SCC. The latter had also lost 3-1 to Singapore Youth Olympic Games (YOG) squad at the weekend before their dozen goal demolition by Police.

The other Padang club will YOG to third spot and avoid the league champion in the play-offs semi-finals. SCC will finish their complement of games on Sunday against ORA. The loser of that game would finish the league at the bottom, something SCC will be very eager to avoid.-story by SHF
