Making his 4th appearance in the coming 2017 SEA Games, is 25-year-old captain, Enrico Marican. Now a seasoned veteran with 16 years of hockey experience under his belt, Enrico nostalgically recalls how he first began his journey in the sport at the age of 10. “I started playing in Peixin Primary School when Mr. Hector Gomez introduced the game to us. I was instantly drawn to the sport!” An alumnus of Northland Secondary School and Nanyang Polytechnic, Enrico was the pride of his alma maters when he was chosen to represent Singapore in the 2007 SEA Games and the 2011 Hong Kong Junior Asia Cup, with the team achieving 2nd placing in both tournaments.

Currently both a hockey and floorball coach for schools such as Huamin Primary School, Yishun Primary School and Serangoon Secondary School, Enrico shared with us the fulfilment he derives from sharing his knowledge and being a nurturer to his students: “It gives me a great sense of satisfaction seeing them believe in themselves and trusting their teammates, especially when I know I contributed to that positivity.” Most importantly, coaching youth gives Enrico a constant reminder of how he got to where he is and why he loves the sport. He ended off with words of encouragement for players losing faith in their abilities in the sport: “Believe in yourself albeit the odds. Motivate yourself to keep pushing even when things get tough, there is always a way. ALWAYS.”

Despite being the captain, the person who anchors the team and someone who is idolised by many, Enrico does face many challenges in training. As with any non-full-time athlete, his greatest challenge is fighting the strong inertia to head to training after work and still having to give his best in keeping the house in order. But what makes everything easier for him is the help of his vice-captain, Silas Abdul Razak. “He is always on the ground whenever I am not able to be and it is great that he provides a different perspective in tasks or situations that arise.”

When asked what he felt was going to be different in this 2017 SEA Games as compared to 2015, Enrico responded with: “It surely has to be our experience.” The men’s team have been to numerous training camps out of Singapore to experience different playing styles of other teams. In total, they have played 8 games to broaden their exposure before they set foot in Bukit Jalil for the SEA Games. He added, “The toughest game was against the TNB Thunderbolts. They were a young, speedy, skilful team and a team that we can learn from and bring that knowledge forward to the SEA Games. Everything has been positive thus far.”

So what can we expect from Enrico this coming SEA Games? As our captain and our midfield lynchpin, expect to see Enrico creating penetrative passes to break the opponent’s defensive structure and controlling the team’s tempo in play. Show your support for Enrico donning the Singapore flag on his number 5 jersey this coming SEA games held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, between 19th to 30th August 2017.

You can also keep a lookout for him playing in National Hockey League Division 1 for Jansenites.
